Question #1:

On a large generator powered by a 6cyl. john dear diesel What would make the exciter rotor banding come loose?

I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine ..est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley

Question #2:

Why does my motorcycle stall after the engine warms up?

I have a 1985 Honda VF500F I've been restoring. I have the entire bike together and it rides great for 15 minutes. After that it wants to stall at idle, and then anything under 4,000 rpm if I can keep it going. I have put a lot of work into solving this issue, here is what I have ruled out:

Entire Ignition system: Plugs, Wires, Coils, CDI Boxes, Pulse Generator, Battery, Connections, Voltage Regulator

Entire Fuel Delivery System: Fuel Tank, Petcock, Tubes, Filter, Carburetor (very clean), Vapor Lock

There are no vacuum leaks, and the filter is in good shape.

During the investigation I discovered that a hose connecting the head near cylinder 4 to the air boost was cracked, and have repaired it. The idle has been adjusted repeatedly without success, along with the air/fuel mixture screws (4). It may be worth noting that the carbs are not perfectly synced, as the 3 adjustable carbs cannot be adjusted enough to match the one unadjustable carb, but they are very close. The bike is will not start without throttle blipping.

I really appreciate the consideration and time spent answering this question, thanks.
The bike is completely stock, with no modifications of any kind.

Question #7:

What should I do? Am I getting ripped off?

I bought a lawnmower from sears and it work good for about a year. Then one day it would start up but would not stay on. I had a 2 year guarantee. So i went and dropped off my lawnmower. They said they'll fix it. Then they took about a week and called me saying that I would have to pay 299.99 to get the lawnmower fixed. Now the lawnmower isn't even worth 299.99 for a brand new one. So I called those people and they said my lawnmower is no longer in this state it is at the repair shop in maryland. So I called them and no one ever picks up the phone. Its been like a months. I had to rent a lawnmower. Which also cost me 30 bucks. What would you do?

Question #8:

How can I get training certifications for marine manufactures? (Evinrude, Mercruiser ect.)?

I currently work at a full service marina. I work on everything. Engines, electronics, generators ect. There is nothing on a boat that I am not asked to repair. The marina I work for is not an authorized dealer though. (no access to training although I still work on it) Was looking to move more South because working on boats below freezing sucks. Anyways a lot of places want me to be certified or there pay is low. I found a trend that although many places want certifications they themselves don"t offer much in training. I am getting older and tiered of making money for other people. Thinking of starting my own repair business. But the problem still remains that I wold like manufactures training.
The three answers brought up alot of my past. Took the auto route myself in high school 20 years ago (top of my class). After that was a college program for a major automaker(top of my class). Worked at a dealership and with constant training was at the highest level that could be obtained. Have routinely worked on and repaired multiplexed network sytems and hybredvehicles. I have been at the same income for the past 10 years (not 100k). Auto dealership to exotic custom cars to working on 100 ft yachts. Same crappy pay. Find myself working 12 to 16 hr days in the name of customer satisfaction. I have a very impressive resume and alot to offer. In this job market employers think giving me a job as a gift. Yes Capt John, the new health care reform is a small business killer. I already pay 1/3 of my income to health insurance on my own so another 3 to 5K is nothing. Atleast my own business could be handed down to my kids if they wanted it.

Question #9:

is a 2001 hyundai accent pulse generator internal or external to the transmission?

Hello all, let me just tell you first whats going on with the car... and then i'll ask the main part of the Q. okay so my mother bought the car to a auto repair shop, and they hooked it into a machine... they said that the computer said "internal error"... so i went to advanced auto and got my codes read because the car runs beautifully... except for the fact that the transmission slips a bit when going slower speeds. advanced auto said that the codes were PO734 which is transmission problems, and PO722 which is auto speed sensor. and i know for a fact that is whats causing this problem... my question is, where is it located on the transmission? there is nothing wrong with this car, and it only acts up every once and a while. its not a constant thing... and i'd like to have my father replace it if possible... but if its inside the transmission itself, he obviously cannot do so. so where is the output speed sensor located? is it internal or external? and also... is a pulse generator the same thing as an output speed sensor? thank you :)

Question #13:

Outside hotspot in front yard. Is it an electric cable problem causing it?

THEN...In 2004 I lost electric to my house because a brick that was used in the backfill settled on my electric cable coming from the street. It half severed the cable. The power repair guys gave me the brick and the piece of sheared cable. We had to run on a generator for a day or so.

NOW...In the last big snow I noticed that a few feet from the same place, no snow would collect in a spot, like it was hot. This was with 20+ inches of snow on the ground everywhere else. I suspect I either have a cable issue in another spot or the fix in the original spot is not holding--although I think they are separate spots. Any idea why there could be a hotspot in the yard? No gas lines. I am trying to get the power people to come and test, but they say if I have electric, it is not the cable. I say I had electric a long time the first time until the brick cut the line enough. I think another brick or something is again cutting the line. Any other possibilities?

Question #14:

Can a VA Loan be used for a Sheriff's Sale property?

There has been a lot of input stating that is is next to impossible to use a VA loan on a foreclosed properties. I am looking at bidding on a cabin at a great price and I have two main concerns.

First, the home may not qualify "as is" for a standard VA Loan for "Existing Construction" but couldn't it qualify under the VA Loan's "Proposed or Under Construction" category as an eligible property? That way any required repairs would be identified and the cost rolled into the loan?

The second concern is that the home is not hooked into standard electric utilities. It currently has a generator and a battery bank and I would install a residential windmill. The property has been surveyed as being in a commercial grade wind zone.

I know the property well and the opeing bid is half of the construction cost not to mention the 20 acres. Thank you for your input.
The plan would be that as "Proposed Construction" the cost of the windmill or other VA required power would be included in the loan. The 10% down at auction is not a problem. With a VA loan I would recover the 10% upon full payment. I would prefer to finance the entire amount and put the 10% into other new home costs.

Question #15:

Question #16:

How can you tell if your motorcycle ('06 GSX-R600) needs a new alternator (aka: "generator")?

I just bought a brand new battery three months ago and had the dealership install it. Things were great until I noticed my bike was having a difficult time starting. Eventually it wouldn't start at all. It was acting as if the battery had died. Well, I hooked the battery up to a charging unit I own in hopes of charging the battery. It appeared as if it was working, but not for long. Now, today, I hooked it up the charger to start it, got it started, and noticed something - while the bike was running (in neutral and on it's stand), my headlights were very dim. I even gave the bike a little gas (thinking it would increase the brightness) and nothing. So, I turned on the high beams and sure enough, the bike's engine died. I'm concluding that it's not the battery and that it's the bike's alternator (which I just found out is called the "generator" on motorcycles). I'd hate to spend a bunch of money on a diagnostics when I could simply apply that money towards repair work. HELP!!! And thanks.
