Question: What do you think the greatest progressive rock album of all time is?

( Back )

Answer #1:

I'm still not sure how anybody can think it's not In the Court of the Crimson King. I believe that's the greatest rock album of all time, not just prog rock.

Answer #2:

my favourite 'prog' album has to be 'Ciclos' by Los Canarios... simply amazing...

Click Here ... yes! (find the rest if you can... 4 movements/ seasons... ace ;)

then they changed... equally 'yes!'... Click Here (actually i think i'm wrong... this was prior to 'Ciclos'... oops ;)

your 'bq's stump me m'afraid :s

Answer #3:

u cant have one answer to that...there have been so many gems of prog music over the years..old and new...since u guys have taken care of the good old ones..ill mention a few recent ones

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Karmakanic - Who's the Boss in the Factory
Riverside - Out of Myself
Opeth - Damnation
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever

A few old overlooked classics :
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tears

BA : Siberian Khatru

*** @elements : totally agree. Still Life is by far Opeth's best!! but that is a metal album..so i dint mention

Answer #4:

While Damnation is a good album, I personally think Opeth's peak is Still Life, lyrically and musically this album is just down-right amazing.

As for the greatest Progressive "Rock" album, I'll have to go with In The Court Of The Crimson King, with Selling England By The Pound in a close second.

Answer #5:

Hmm, I'm hesitant to say it because its a fairly recent release, but "Cybion" by Kalisia. One song, seventy minutes, pure genius.

"Crimson" by Edge of Sanity is up there as well. Queensrÿche's "Operation: Mindcrime" ranks pretty high. All the Persefone albums, "Mabool" by Orphaned Land... there are so many brilliant prog albums, its hard to narrow it down.

Answer #6:

'Close To The Edge' for me.

BQ: 'Time And A Word'
BQ2: 'Kind Of Blue'
BQ3:I seem to remember 'Shout' being pretty ropey.
BQ4: Never liked the show, sorry.

Answer #7:

'Close to the Edge' and 'Selling England By the Pound' are tied for me. 'Larks Tongues in Aspic' would be high on the list too.

BQ: "Revealing Science of God"
BQ2: currently, 'Miles Ahead'
BQ3: 'Smooth Noodle Maps,' easily
BQ4: No, I can't say I have unfortunately

Answer #8:

Hahaha... you Prog Peeps are nowhere near as persecuted as the Jonas Fans.

The answer is Permanent Waves ~ Rush

Sleeper Fave: Stormwatch ~ Tull

BQ: Machine Messiah
BQ2: Kind Of Blue... I'm not that into him, so I go with what I know.
BQ3: Smooth Noodle Maps,
BQ4: No... never liked those old hags

Answer #9:

I would say Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes. For me it's the epitome of progressive rock. With 4 movements clocking in at over 80 minutes, it's Yes's 9th Symphony. So full of texture, perfect musicianship, extraordinary original compositions, and it's abstrusely based on some Shastric scriptures. Add to that a beautiful cover by Roger Dean. And most importantly: Critics hate it. How much more prog can you get?

Too many honorable mentions, some of them being: Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield, The Snow Goose by Camel, Relayer by Yes and Octopus by Gentle Giant.

BQ: Right now I'll say The Remembering (High the Memory), but it always changes.
BQ2: Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew.
BQ3: Not familiar with them enough to decide.
BQ4: It's not one of the two episodes I can remember watching.

Answer #10:

I don't think there is one.

My personal favorite for a variety of reasons is Genesis -- "Selling England by the Pound"

BQ: South Side of the Sky
BQ2: Bitches Brew, but I have not heard enough Miles Davis, to feel that I know.
BQ3: Shout
BQ4: I actually have not seen that, but that is one of my Favorite shows !!

Edit --

MIGH - I LOVE YOU !!

Los Canarios -- "Ciclos" by is a remarkable album and one of he "few representatives" from Spain, that "crash the Party" by English, French, & Progressivo Italiano :)

Other Wicked Symphonic Prog albums from Spain.

Gotic - "Escenes" ( the Spanish Gentle Giant & PFM )
Maquina! -- (both albums)
Bloque -- "Hombre, Tierra y Alma" ( Heavy Prog )
Galadriel -- (all albums) -- like PFM :)

...and "Cowboy Neal"... <sigh>... Mr. "Itchy Britches"...

-- we need to Talk about YOUR Answer :)) lol ;)

Answer #11:

dark side of the moon by pink floyd or any of ELO's early albums

bq:roundabout
bq2:don't have any so i can't answer
bq3:again don't have any devo albums so i can't answer
bq4:yes,i did!golden girls is actually one of my favorite tv shows!

Answer #12:

I'll say "In the Court" for many reasons. It was hugely influential, has a great variety of moods throughout, and every song is fantastic (yes, even Moonchild). Selling England might be a more "perfect" and "beautiful" album, but for me In the Court takes it for it's power and influential status.

As far as favorites, "SMPT:e" by Transatlantic, and "Octopus" by Gentle Giant are up there as well, but above I went for my idea of more objective criteria. Also "Red" by King Crimson, but it doesn't have the same influential status as "In the Court" and is less of a "definitive progressive rock" album.

BQ: Starship Trooper
BQ2: Kind of Blue
BQ3: Likely, "Shout", or "Total Devo". I don't say "Smooth Noodle Maps" because often bands get a little bit better after their late 80's slump, just because they say, "Hey, why not?" :P
BQ4: No.

Answer #13:

1. Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
2. The Yes Album by Yes
3. In The Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson
4. A Farewell To Kings by Rush
5. Selling England by The Pound by Genesis
6. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
7. Tarkus by Emerson Lake And Palmer
8. Aqualung by Jethro Tull
9. Demons And Wizards by Uriah Heep
10. Close To The Edge by Yes

BA: Starship Trooper
BA2: Bitches Brew
BA3: I'm not familiar enough to say
BA4: Yes, but most episodes of that show are awesome

Answer #14:

BQ4: Hell yeah!! That's the BEST SHOW EVER!! hahahah! And you brought up one of my favorite episodes!! BEST SHOW.
