Peak sharing will be when the sudden excess loading on the system is spread evenly between the generators or providers of electrical power. Peak shaving is when the amplitude of the peak demand is reduced at source by imposing penalties on consumers to try to change their consumption habits, ie to use less power at peak times and more at off peak times.

Peak shaving: this is a term that applies to various processes for minimizing the peak that occurs in cycling loads. One of the techniques is to us a local generator to supply a portion of the cycling load, thereby minimizing the magnitude of the peak that is passed on to the grid.

Peak sharing: this is a term for the processes involved in distributing loads among various generators. When there is a step change in load on a system, there are four stages in the process for dealing with the change.

1. Initially, the change in load is distributed among the sources in the system in relationship to the impedances in the network.

2. The ability of a generator to absorb a change in load depends on its ability to change speed. So the second stage in the process of dealing with changes is load is governed by the relative intertias of the generators in the system - the machines with lighter inertia absorbing more of the load change.

3. As the machines absorb the load change, there will be (must be) a change in frequency. If the load increases, the frequency must decrease. The various machines each have governors, and the responses of those governors to frequency changes then determines the third stage in the distribution of the load change. You may hear the term 'droop' used to describe the governor characteristic that controls this action.

4. Finally, while the governors of the various machines will respond in a way that causes a sharing of load with a constant frequency, the frequency will almost certainly not be the original (and desired) system frequency. So an outside control system is required to reset overall system frequency.
