if its staying lit doesnt always mean its the generator, could be a multiple of things. cant really give you and answer for that. check vw books they would know more about it.

You need to check and make sure all your grounds are good. Then check the out put of the generator.

Answer #3:

DC generators require "field flashing" usually after replacement of any component in the charging system. This is probably the case with yours. Methods vary as to field flashing but essentially you apply a momentary 12V (battery power) to the field terminal at the voltage regulator, this "excites" the generator field and you're back in business.
